Outdoor blinds - which ones to choose for terraces, balconies and pergolas?
External blinds are modern screens installed at windows, terraces, balconies, pergolas and gazebos. They help to reduce the heat build-up in a space, improve privacy and allow the amount of light and ventilation to be controlled. They are increasingly being used not only for building facades, but also as side walls for terraces and pergolas.
The problem is that under the term „external blinds” there are several completely different solutions today. Façade blinds installed against windows work differently, movable terrace blinds differently and fixed louvre panels used against fences, gazebos or sheds differently.
If you are wondering which outdoor blinds will work best for your home or garden, this guide will help you understand the differences between the different systems and avoid costly mistakes when planning your terrace, balcony or pergola development.
What are external blinds?
External blinds are covers mounted on the outside of a building or garden structure. Depending on the type, they can:
-
limit the heating of the space,
-
protect from the sun,
-
improve privacy,
-
shield from the wind,
-
partially protected from light rain,
-
regulate the amount of light and ventilation.
They usually consist of horizontal or vertical fins made of aluminium or wood. In some systems, the lamellas remain stationary. In others, they can be rotated and the degree to which the space is covered can be adjusted.
In practice, the term „external blinds” is now used to describe both the classic façade blinds installed at windows and the modern terrace blinds used for building terraces, pergolas, balconies, gazebos or carports.
What types of external blinds are there?
External blinds can be divided in several ways:
-
by site,
-
mode of operation,
-
material,
-
construction.
This is important because many people are comparing solutions that actually perform completely different functions.
Façade blinds and terrace blinds - not the same thing
This is one of the most common mistakes.
Facade shutters
Façade blinds are mainly installed at windows and large glazed areas of buildings. Their primary function is to limit the heating of the interior and control the light entering the rooms. They are most often made of thin aluminium lamellas and are electrically controlled.
This is a window-type solution.
Terrace blinds, i.e. blinds for the side development of terraces and balconies
Terrace blinds, on the other hand, are installed:
-
on terraces,
-
balconies,
-
pergolas,
-
arbours,
-
carports,
-
rubbish bins,
-
modern fences.
They create a lateral screen for the space and help to increase privacy and comfort in the garden or terrace. They can be installed vertically or horizontally. In the case of movable systems, they allow the flow of light and air to be regulated.
It is to this group that mobile OpenUp System external blinds.

Movable or fixed external blinds?
Another important difference concerns the way the fins work.
Movable blinds
In movable systems, you can adjust the position of the boards or slats. Thanks to this:
-
you let in more light,
-
you increase ventilation,
-
you close off the space from your neighbours,
-
you limit gusts of wind.
This solution gives the greatest control over the space.
In the OpenUp System, the movable laths can be mounted both vertically and horizontally. This is an important difference, as many systems on the market only work in one arrangement.
By combining several modules into a single build, you can control a larger part of the structure with a single movement.

Fixed blinds
In fixed blinds, the louvres are set at a specific angle and do not change position. This solution is simpler in terms of design and often cheaper, but it does not offer the possibility to adjust the light and ventilation.
It works mainly where you care:
-
lightly shielding the space,
-
maintaining ventilation,
-
decorative façade effect,
-
permanent installation of a terrace or gazebo.

Wood or aluminium external blinds?
The choice of material affects not only the appearance, but also the durability, weight of the structure and subsequent maintenance.
External wooden blinds
Wood gives a more natural and warmer effect. It blends in well:
-
with a garden,
-
wooden houses,
-
pergolas,
-
natural-style development.
However, it must be remembered that wood requires regular maintenance and protection against moisture and UV radiation.
Wooden external blinds are often chosen by those who want a softer, more organic feel to their buildings.

Aluminium external blinds
Aluminium withstands changing weather conditions better and does not require as much maintenance as wood. It is dimensionally stable and works well in modern projects.
Aluminium laths:
-
do not require impregnation,
-
are corrosion-resistant,
-
easier to keep clean,
-
work well with larger structures.
This is why aluminium blinds are often chosen for:
-
modern pergolas,
-
balcony buildings,
-
large terraces,
-
a realisation with a minimalist character.
Woodgrain aluminium laths, which combine the look of wood with the durability of aluminium, are also becoming increasingly popular.

Installation of external blinds - what is worth knowing?
External blinds can be fitted:
- vertically,
- Horizontally,
- as a permanent installation,
- or in a sliding system.

- type of construction,
- installation widths,

- and the expected level of coverage of the space.
In the OpenUp System, movable laths can be mounted both vertically and horizontally. This makes it easier to adapt the installation to:

- arbours,
- or carports.
Before choosing a system, it is worth considering:

Frequently asked questions
Are external blinds and façade blinds the same thing?
No. Façade blinds are mainly installed on windows and large glazed areas of buildings. Their function is to limit the heating of the interiors and control the light entering the rooms. They help to increase privacy and comfort of use of the space around the house.
Do external blinds protect against rain?
