Enclosing a balcony in a block of flats - formalities, regulations and opportunities

Enclosing a balcony in a block of flats allows you to shield the space from wind, rain and the sight of neighbours. In most cases, it requires the consent of the community or cooperative. You can choose either a fixed enclosure or movable systems, such as wooden or aluminium blinds.

If you are considering making such a cover, check out the following balcony development - from design to installation.

Is it possible to make a balcony enclosure in a block of flats

It is possible to enclose a balcony in a block of flats, but this needs to be adapted to the building structure and the rules in force. In most cases, it is necessary to obtain permission from the housing association or cooperative.

Lightweight structures that do not interfere with the body of the building often do not require planning permission. More elaborate systems may require a design notification.

Do you need permission to enclose a balcony?

The installation of a balcony in a block of flats should always be preceded by a request to the management of the housing association or cooperative for permission. There should be no problem in obtaining such approval.

What does a balcony enclosure in a block of flats look like in practice

Balcony cladding varies depending on the type of building and the desired effect. In blocks of flats, lightweight solutions are most commonly used, mounted to the existing balcony structure.

The process includes:

  • preparation of a design adapted to the dimensions of the balcony
  • assembly of supporting structure
  • installation of the selected building system

If you need implementation, see the options available: balcony enclosure.

Blinds for the balcony - a functional development

Enclosing balconies with movable external blinds is a modern solution that combines functionality, aesthetics and convenience. Movable blinds allow easy adjustment of sunlight and privacy, so users can adapt the balcony to their needs at any time. They provide an effective barrier against rain and wind, allowing you to enjoy your balcony whatever the weather conditions. The ease of adjusting the position of the blinds allows a quick change of environment without investing in additional canopies or curtains.

The use of external blinds is also a way to add a modern touch to a balcony. Available in a variety of styles and colours, they can match the look of the building and individual preferences. They are relatively easy to install and durable materials such as wood or aluminium ensure durability and low maintenance.

Enclosing a balcony with blinds is also a financially beneficial option. It can increase the value of your property, as well as helping to save energy by better regulating the temperature in your home. It is an ideal solution for those who are looking for practical, aesthetically pleasing and cost-effective ways to improve the quality of life in their home.

You can change the positioning of the planks at any time - from full build to openwork cover.

Blinds for balconies and terraces - which material to choose

You have three options to choose from:

  • wood - requires impregnation, gives a natural appearance
  • aluminium - moisture-resistant, maintenance-free
  • polycarbonate - if you don't want to regulate the light, but want constant protection from the wind.

What is the difference between wooden and aluminium blinds for a balcony in a block of flats?

The choice of material depends on the conditions and the desired effect. Wood blinds give the terrace a natural, warm look. They are the quintessence of country and rustic style. Unfortunately, to prolong their life, you should impregnate them regularly. The wooden boards in the blinds should not be longer than 110 cm.
Aluminium is an excellent construction material: robust and durable. It is not sensitive to moisture. This makes aluminium cladding a great choice for balconies exposed to changeable weather conditions. Depending on whether you fix the aluminium laths vertically or horizontally, you can use lengths of 250 or 200 cm maximum.

When is it worth choosing polycarbonate?

Used in a permanent balcony enclosure, it creates an airtight shelter from wind and rain. It is a particularly useful solution in blocks of flats, where the balcony is exposed to strong gusts and precipitation. Polycarbonate allows light to pass through well, so it does not obscure the interior of the flat, while limiting the cooling of the space. It works well where you want maximum protection and the ability to use your balcony for most of the year.

How do you make a louvre enclosure on your balcony?

Select material, colour and method of attachment of blinds on the balconyand then move on to installation. It is worth bearing in mind that an installation in a block of flats may differ from an installation in a bungalow or lower house. If you have any questions about installation, contact us.

  1. Before you start the installation, make a design according to the dimensions of the balcony. Draw up development plan, taking into account the positioning of the blinds and the materials needed for the structure and frames to which you will attach the blinds.
  2. Prepare the ground, i.e. make sure the balcony floor is even, stable and suitable for the installation of the blinds. You like Sliding housings? Our system allows you to fix sliding walls even on ground with a slight slope.
  3. Installation of structural posts. Install the posts that will support the blinds on the balcony.
  4. Assembly of the frame. Assemble the frame that will form the base for the blinds. Fix the frame to the posts.
  5. Installation of blinds: Read the instructions on how to install the blinds.
  6. Painting or impregnation. Wooden blinds should be treated with impregnation.

Why enclose a balcony?

Sheltered balcony can be a purely aesthetic solution, but can also increase its functionality. If you have a rooftop balcony, shade it. Then you can easily become independent of the weather and spend time there whenever you feel like it.

If you have a balcony in a block of flats-typical of multi-storey estates-by putting up blind side walls, you gain a private space. This allows you to sunbathe, take a nap or have a drink with friends without worry. Without having to expose yourself to prying eyes.

On a sheltered balcony It will be easier for you to grow wind- and sun-sensitive plants. How about setting up the mini herb garden of your dreams? You can create a safe place for exercise, children to play, or a discreet corner for adults to relax.

Balcony enclosure in a block of flats

Enclosing a balcony to a room - is it worth it?

If you want to do a complete built-in - you get an extra interior that you can plan in different ways. It's worth considering such an enclosure. Especially when an open balcony in a block of flats is difficult to use. Whether because of noise or exposure to harsh weather conditions (e.g. strong winds with a north and north-west exposure).

A fully enclosed balcony in a block of flats is also an additional protection against burglary. In addition, it makes it impossible to fall off - children or pets.
