OpenUp System movable decking boards
Movable boards is a system allowing for the installation of movable terrace blinds (movable external blinds). They are installed in pergolas, gazebos, balconies and sheds. The possibility of mobility allows the control of light, ventilation and privacy in a built-up space - without electric drive.
In this category, you will find complete OpenUp System moving board kits and ready-made louvre panels. The basis of the solution is the moving board mechanism - the OpenUp System handles - and matching wooden planks or aluminium laths. The modular design allows the louvre wall to be built in either a vertical or horizontal arrangement.
What are moving boards?
Movable boards are a system of adjustable slats mounted in brackets that allow the angle of each board to be changed. This allows the user to increase the light inlet, reduce ventilation or shield the terrace from outside view at any time. The system works manually and does not require power.
How does the mechanism for moving boards work?
The basis of the system is the handles for external blinds OpenUp System with a length of 58.2 cm. Each holder has 6 slots for boards or laths.
One module allows for a construction height of approximately 59 cm. Further modules are mounted one above the other to form a full wall up to 250 cm high. Combined into one section, you can adjust simultaneously.
OpenUp System moving board mechanism:
- does not require electricity,
- has no cables or springs,
- works on the pivot principle,
- allows infinitely variable adjustment of the angle of the slats.
Largest building height coverage per module
The bracket's 58.2 cm length and 6 sockets mean that one set covers more wall space than shorter brackets on the market.
In practice For assembly companies, this means:
- Fewer modules at higher build levels,
- fewer attachment points,
- shorter installation time,
- easier levelling,
- less risk of complaints.
The higher the wall, the more pronounced the difference in the number of sets needed.
Where is the movable board system used?
The system works well in:
- building up the side walls of the pergola,
- garden sheds,
- balconies in multi-family buildings,
- carports,
- commercial developments (food courts, hotels).
Movable boards allow for adjustable cover without closing the space permanently.
System for wood and aluminium blinds
OpenUp System works with both wooden planks and aluminium fins. The choice of material depends on the nature of the structure, the investor's expectations and the operating conditions.
Wooden boards - cross-section 9,8 × 2 cm
Wooden planks work well in the construction of pergolas and gazebos made of wood. Their cross-section has been selected so that:
- ensure adequate stiffness while maintaining low weight,
- evenly lay in the holders without any gaps,
- create a uniform, aesthetically pleasing surface when closed.
Wood allows for a natural visual effect and it is easy to match the colour to the supporting structure by impregnation or painting. This is a solution that is often chosen for backyard projects and classic gardens.
Aluminium laths - cross section 9.9 × 1.95 cm
Aluminium laths are the solution for modern constructions and locations with high humidity. Their cross-section provides:
- dimensional stability at varying temperatures,
- torsion and swelling resistance,
- even operation in the mechanism over a long period of time.
Aluminium does not require periodic impregnation, is resistant to moisture and does not change shape when exposed to the weather. It is a solution often used in commercial buildings and aluminium pergolas.
Precise adjustment to the mechanism
Both the wooden planks and the aluminium laths were dimensionally matched to the OpenUp System handles. As a result:
- the elements rotate smoothly,
- When closed, they form an even surface,
- does not result in the „teeth” effect characteristic of randomly selected boards.
The system forms a complete solution - handle and infill work together in terms of dimension and construction. This reduces the risk of backlash, unevenness and problems during installation.
Polish manufacturer - guarantee of repeatability and availability
OpenUp System is designed and manufactured in Poland. For assembly companies, this means:
- constant availability of handles,
- shorter lead times,
- dimensional repeatability,
- possibility of making larger investments.
Polish moving board handles are available in six colours:
- RAL 9005 - black
- RAL 7016 - anthracite
- RAL 9003 - white
- RAL 8017 - dark brown
- RAL 8016 - brown
- RAL 8024 - light brown
This allows the system to be matched to wooden and aluminium constructions without additional painting.
Assembly of movable boards
Assembly consists of preparing the structural frame and fixing the brackets at the appropriate intervals. The boards or laths are inserted into the sockets.
The system is modular - the body can be extended with additional segments at any time.
Movable board kits - the ready-to-assemble solution
In this category you will find the complete OpenUp System moving board kits. The set includes:
- handles (left and right),
- Matching wooden planks or aluminium laths,
- elements to build a module approximately 59 cm high.
The system is modular - successive sets are assembled on top of each other to achieve the full building height.
The kits are mainly selected by installation companies and builders of pergolas and terraces, who want to:
- calculate precisely the number of modules needed,
- reduce installation time,
- maintain repeatability from one implementation to the next.
Available variants of moving board sets:

Prefabricated frames with movable boards
For investors and installation companies we also offer pre-fabricated frames with fitted handles. Matching boards or laths are supplied in a separate package.
Variants available: louvre panels made of movable boards
The solution works well with a ready-made load-bearing structure.
Price of moving boards and pricing
The price depends on:
- building heights,
- hole widths,
- selected material.
You can order brackets, ready-made louvre panels or kits for self-assembly in the shop, or send the dimensions for a quotation. The system makes it easy to estimate the number of modules needed

Frequently asked questions about moving boards
What are moving boards?
Movable planks are part of a terrace, balcony or pergola enclosure that form an adjustable partition. They are mounted in a special mechanism that allows you to rotate all the planks at the same time - you change the angle of the planks and control the amount of light, ventilation and the degree to which the space is covered. The OpenUp System movable boards are a Polish-made solution. The mechanism is made in Poland and designed for specific cross-sections of the filling: wooden boards with a cross section of 9.8 × 2 cm, aluminium laths with a cross-section of 9.9 × 1.95 cm with a dedicated profile. The planks are set in handles that operate in parallel. When the lever or control bar is turned, all the elements change position within the same range. In the closed position, they form a compact shield against wind and external vision. In the open position, they allow ventilation and light access. Important: Ordinary boards with a different cross-section will not work properly with the mechanism. They may create a „Christmas tree” effect, i.e. visually resemble a fixed blind without the possibility of fine adjustment. OpenUp System moving boards are used as: - side development of pergolas, - terrace walls, - balcony partitions, - infill of sliding patio doors. It's a solution for people who want to have control of the space without building a permanent, non-openable wall.
How do the moving boards work?
The movable planks work thanks to a special mechanism that creates a set of 58.3 cm long handles (left and right) made of glass fibre-reinforced polypropylene. Each handle has six movable sockets into which the boards or aluminium laths are inserted.
How to make moving boards?
Follow this link for video instructions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZUIqYUPDNY&t=21s. In short: You attach the handles to the structure with a screwdriver. Remember to ALWAYS shorten the bottom bracket by 5 cm. After you have screwed in all the brackets and connected them with clips, you insert the filling: boards or laths.
Can I buy a moving board mechanism along with the boards or slats?
Yes, in the Opened.co.uk shop you can buy both the handles themselves for the movable boards and the ready-made sets with wood (unpainted, painted) or aluminium (unpainted, painted, wood-like) infill, as well as the ready-made profiles to which you will attach the handles.
Will movable planks work well on a balcony?
Yes, this is one of the most common uses. They allow you to shield your balcony from the wind and provide privacy without losing light.
What is the difference between moving aluminium planks and wooden planks?
Aluminium ones are weatherproof and maintenance-free, while wooden ones provide a natural look to the structure and can be painted or treated.
Can the movable planks be fitted by yourself?
Yes. The kits are designed for simple assembly - simply prepare the frame of the structure and fit the brackets in the designated areas.
How do the OpenUp system's moving boards work?
Each board rotates in the handles, allowing the amount of light and airflow to be adjusted. The mechanism requires no power and operates manually.
How many colours are there for the OpenUp System moving board handles?
Six: black (RAL 9005), anthracite (RAL 7016), white (RAL 9003), brown (RAL 8016), light brown (RAL 8024), dark brown (RAL 8017)
Can I order moveable planks in a ready-made frame, with infill (wooden planks/lamellas)?
Yes. In addition to the do-it-yourself kits, we also offer ready-made frames with infill - made to measure. You receive a complete panel with attached OpenUp System brackets, which you simply attach to the terrace, pergola or balcony structure.
Do movable boards require maintenance?
The OpenUp System moving board mechanism requires no maintenance or adjustment. The handles are made of UV-, moisture- and temperature-resistant plastic. For wooden boards, a standard impregnation of the wood is necessary - as for any outdoor structure. Aluminium laths require no treatment and are weatherproof.
How many modules are needed for a 220 cm high wall?
One module of the OpenUp System's movable planks allows an installation height of approximately 59 cm. To build up a 220 cm high wall, you need: 220 cm ÷ 59 cm ≈ 3.7 In practice, this means mounting 4 modules one above the other. This makes it possible to achieve full height coverage and keep all sections adjustable at the same time. The exact number of sets can be easily calculated by dividing the wall height by 59 cm and rounding up. Alternatively, you can buy 3 sets of brackets and select a raking number of single lamellas in our shop.
Can the movable board system be mounted horizontally and vertically?
Yes. The OpenUp movable board system can be installed both vertically and horizontally. The choice of layout depends on the supporting structure and the installation design. The mechanism works in both configurations, with the boards or laths rotating in the axis of the brackets, allowing light and ventilation to be adjusted.
Will movable boards work well in an aluminium pergola?
Yes. OpenUp System's movable boards are compatible with wooden and aluminium structures. Aluminium pergolas in particular often use aluminium laths, which provide dimensional stability and do not require impregnation. The brackets can be attached to the aluminium frame in the same way as to the wooden structure. The system is suitable for both private and commercial projects.
How do you make movable boards for a pergola?
To make movable pergola boards, you need a mechanism with handles and matching wooden boards or aluminium laths. The brackets are fitted to the prepared structural frame and the planks are then glued into them. Each module is approximately 59 cm high. Full coverage is achieved by mounting the segments one above the other. The system does not require power or additional drive components.
How much do movable decking boards cost?
The price of the moving boards depends on: height and width of development, the number of modules required, the chosen material (wood or aluminium), the type of construction (assembly kit or prefabricated frame). The cost is calculated based on the number of modules with a height of 58.2 cm. An exact quote can be prepared once the dimensions of the opening are known.
Do movable planks protect against wind and rain?
The movable planks reduce direct gusts of wind and partially shield against precipitation. When closed, they form a compact surface that reduces ventilation and improves the comfort of the terrace. However, they are not fully airtight - the system provides an adjustable shield rather than hermetically sealing the space.
Can movable planks be fitted into an existing structure?
Yes. The movable board system can be fitted into an already constructed pergola, gazebo or shed, provided a suitable mounting frame is prepared. If the supporting structure is ready, you can choose modular assembly kits or order ready-made louvre panels to fit the dimensions of the opening.
