Installing a mechanism for moving boards doesn't require specialised tools, but it's worth knowing a few rules to make the job easier and ensure a long-lasting result. In this guide, you'll see how to install the OpenUp System in two variants - vertical and horizontal - and what to look out for to ensure your patio blinds run smoothly for years to come.
Why choose the OpenUp system for moving boards
The OpenUp System mechanism makes it possible to enclose a terrace, pergola or balcony in a durable and aesthetically pleasing way.
It works with both wood and aluminium, allowing the angle of the slats to be adjusted vertically and horizontally.
Simple installation and weather resistance make this solution suitable for any garden development.

Assembling the mechanism for moving boards - step-by-step instructions
Choose your installation method - vertical or horizontal
Before you start work, decide how you want to position the laths: vertically (e.g. as a side screen) or horizontally (e.g. as a sliding wall).
This is important, right from the ordering stage. Because we do NOT install wooden blinds vertically! Why? Wood is a 'living' material. It reacts to changing weather conditions. Installed vertically, it can warp, which will not only affect the aesthetics of the blinds, but can hinder the mechanism for moving boards.

If you prefer a still, printable version, you will find it on the product page. You can also download the manual: instructions for assembling the movable boards OpenUp system.
Prepare the filling (boards/lamellas) and the holders
For installation, you need OpenUp brackets and aluminium planks or fins.
Ensure that the boards are cross-sectional 9.8 x 2 cm (wood) or 9.9 x 1.95 cm (aluminium) - are dimensions to match the mechanism.
This will ensure that the blinds close tightly, without the 'Christmas tree' effect.
Fit the handles and check the operation of the mechanism
Screw the brackets parallel to each other to the wood or aluminium structure. You can find the aluminium profiles you need to build the frames at Otwrane.co.uk.
Once the handles have been fitted, screw the boards or laths into the moving arms of the mechanism. You do not need to fix them with screws. A properly fitted infill will hold firmly, thanks to the elasticity of the OpenUp system handles. Finally, test the operation of the mechanism. If you have screwed the brackets correctly (so that the arms are at the same heights) the blinds will operate smoothly.
The OpenUp system allows the angle of the slats to be controlled with a single movement - for both vertical and horizontal positioning.
What to make moving boards out of - wood or aluminium?
The choice of material is not only important for the appearance, but also for the durability of the entire structure.
- Wooden planks will work well in buildings with a natural character - such as wood terraces or garden pergolas.
- Aluminium laths They are moisture-resistant and maintenance-free. You can read more about material selection here:  What material for movable external blinds?
The most common mistakes when installing a mechanism for moving boards
- The use of boards with an unsuitable cross-section - leads to a "Christmas tree" effect.
- Lack of levelling of handles - makes it difficult to close the slats.
- Mounting too close to the edge of the frame - limits the angle of adjustment.
