DIY carport – how to build one step by step?

A carport can be a simple, open structure or a more elaborate canopy with side panels. It can be made of timber, steel or aluminium, and the sides can be fitted with planks, aluminium profiles or other panelling suited to the structure.

If you’re planning to build a DIY carport, the most important thing is to plan the dimensions, the groundwork, the supporting structure, the roof and any side walls carefully. In this article, we outline the various stages and highlight where you can make use of ready-made solutions to simplify assembly, such as Skossy fittings.

If you don’t want to build a carport from scratch, you can choose a ready-made one Bespoke aluminium carport, including installation.

Carport – choose the right location

Before you start planning the structure, choose a location that is easily accessible by car. Take into account not only access to the property, but also the space needed to open doors, manoeuvre and use the carport freely.

You should also check the layout of the underground pipework and consider how water will be drained from the roof. It’s worth taking the overall appearance of the property into account from the outset – a well-positioned carport should complement the house and garden, rather than hindering the use of the space.

Design a carport

Even with a simple lean-to, it’s worth starting with a design. Determine its width, length and height, where the posts will be positioned, how the roof will be constructed, and whether the sides will be enclosed.

At this stage, you should also decide whether the carport is to be free-standing or attached to the building. This affects the structure, the method of attachment and the drainage.

A good plan allows you to work out the materials you’ll need in advance, anticipate any tricky parts of the installation and minimise the need for adjustments during construction.

What materials can be used to build a carport?

The structure of a carport can be made from materials such as wood, steel or aluminium. Each material offers different possibilities and requires a different method of assembly and protection.

Wood is often chosen for DIY projects because it is easy to cut, fit and work with using basic tools. A steel structure requires more experience when it comes to preparing and joining the components. Aluminium is lightweight, corrosion-resistant and does not require as much maintenance as timber, but building the entire structure yourself may be more difficult.

However, this does not mean that the side panelling must be made of the same material as the structure. A properly prepared frame can be fitted with various types of infill – timber, aluminium or other solutions tailored to the design.

Prepare the ground for the carport

The ground surface should ensure that the structure is stable and that vehicles can access it easily. Depending on the location, options include paving stones, concrete slabs, gravel or other hard-surfaced solutions.

It is also worth ensuring there is a suitable gradient to the ground and a proper drainage system. This will prevent water from pooling directly under the car after heavy rain.

Plan how the structure will be founded

The method of securing the posts depends on the type of structure, its dimensions, the ground conditions and the materials used. For wooden carports, specially prepared bases or concrete footings are often used, to which the posts are then secured.

At this stage, it is particularly important to ensure that the support points are level and correctly positioned. Any errors made at the base of the structure will later make it more difficult to assemble the subsequent components.

Build the support structure for the carport

The next stage is to construct the posts and horizontal structural elements in accordance with the prepared design.

The method of joining depends on the material. In timber structures, suitable fasteners and fittings are used, amongst other things. For other materials, solutions tailored to the specific structural system will be required.

The most important thing is to ensure the correct dimensions, vertical and horizontal alignment, and to provide adequate bracing for the entire structure.

Build the roof of the carport

If a carport is really to protect a car from rain and snow, it needs suitable roofing and a proper drainage system.

The type of roof must be chosen at the design stage. Regardless of the material used, it is important to ensure an appropriate pitch and a system for draining rainwater.

If you do not wish to design and build a complete canopy yourself, an alternative is a ready-made, made-to-measure aluminium carport, including installation.

Fit the side panels to the carport

The carport can remain completely open or be partially enclosed on one or more sides. Side enclosures help to restrict visibility, shield the car from the sun and wind coming from the side, and give the whole structure a neater appearance.

This is exactly where you can make use of the Skossa fixings.

They allow infill elements to be fitted at a fixed angle and enable the creation of a standardised structure using planks, aluminium profiles or any other suitably selected material. The fixings can be used on various structures – not just wooden ones – provided that the method of installation is correctly adapted to the substrate and the frame.

This is a good solution if you’re building the carport yourself but want the sides to look neat and tidy.

A DIY carport or a ready-made one?

Building a carport yourself gives you a great deal of freedom in choosing the materials, dimensions and finish. However, it does require planning the structure, preparing the ground, constructing the roof and joining all the components together correctly.

If you want to do some of the work yourself, you can use ready-made solutions for fitting the side panels, such as Skossy fixings.

If, on the other hand, you’re looking for a ready-made, made-to-measure aluminium carport that’s installed on site, take a look at our range Aluminium carports from Otwierane.pl.
