What is terrace siding?
Terrace side development is a structure installed on the sides of the terrace to protect it from wind, rain, sun and the stares of neighbours. This solution increases the functionality of the terrace, allowing it to be used for most of the year. The side development also acts as a visual screen and contributes to the aesthetics of the entire home space.
Why is a side terrace enclosure installed?
Lateral enclosures are used when the terrace is exposed to unfavourable weather conditions or when privacy is desired. This solution works well in detached houses, terraced houses and on balconies. The most common purposes:
- shelter from strong winds (e.g. from the north),
- protection of garden furniture against precipitation,
- a reduction in sunshine in the afternoon,
- reduced visibility from neighbours or the street,
- improved thermal comfort in the terrace area.
What can the side terrace cladding be made of?
The type of material is crucial to the durability, aesthetics and functionality of the entire structure. The most common variants of side terrace cladding are:
1. Movable external blinds (OpenUp system)
This is the most commonly chosen solution if you want to regulate the amount of light, wind and privacy. The OpenUp system works on the principle of movable boards or slats (wooden or aluminium), which can be rotated using handles made of resistant polypropylene. The whole is fixed to aluminium or wooden frames.
Pros:
- light and airflow control,
- can be completely covered or tilted,
- aesthetically pleasing appearance to match the pergola or modern façade,
- available in various colours and dimensions.

2. Fixed blinds (Skossy system)
This is a system of fixed, inclined fins mounted at a specific angle. They provide a fixed screen, without the possibility of adjustment. The Skossy system is used when the user wants a durable, almost maintenance-free solution. It's also a more cost-effective solution for a side terrace development.
Pros:
- simplicity of construction,
- good shade and privacy,
- stability in high winds.

3. Tempered glass enclosure
Toughened glass is an aesthetically pleasing and durable solution for those who want to retain their view while protecting themselves from wind or rain. Panels can be installed in fixed or sliding frames.
Pros:
- protection while maintaining visibility,
- modern design,
- weather-resistant,
- Can be combined with pergolas and aluminium structures.

4. timber, composite panel or polycarbonate cladding
Although they are not part of the Opened.co.uk range, it is worth mentioning that some built-ins are made of solid wooden panels, composite panels or milky polycarbonate. These are less flexible solutions, often used as fixed or decorative elements.
Siding isn't everything - also consider a polycarbonate terrace canopy
If you are thinking of building a terrace on the side, but are also planning its extension or you want to use it for most of the year, it is worth considering installation of roofing in the form of pergolas or terrace canopies.
- Aluminium or wooden pergola - a fixed structure with a polycarbonate or lamella roof, often combined with side louvres.
- Polycarbonate terrace roofing - Mounted directly to the façade, it protects against rain and sun and can be supplemented with side panels.
The combination of canopy and side louvres creates a a year-round, functional area at the house, increasing user comfort and property value.
