How terrace blinds work
How do patio blinds - otherwise known as moving boards - work?
Terrace blindsalso known as movable boardsis a type of movable sidewall cladding for terraces, balconies, gazebos and sheds.
Mounted on special brackets, the boards or laths can be adjusted 180 degrees. Closed smoothly, they shelter from the wind, sun and outside gaze. When open, they form an openwork structure that gives lightness to the sheltered structure. Want to know more, What are terrace blinds? Click and read. Or watch the video below:
How do patio blinds work - what should you know?
- Swivel handles
Each plank (or aluminium fin) is embedded in a swivel mount, such as the the OpenUp system. The holders allow individual boards to be rotated vertically or horizontally - without electronics, actuators or motors. If you connect the brackets, they work together. Rotating equally over the entire height of the building. - Manual angle adjustment
You change the opening angle manually - just twist one of the boards to give the position to the rest. In the closed position, they form a sealed wall. In the open position - they let light and air through. - The result: a lightweight but effective shield.
When the lamellas are closed, the structure acts as a full wall - sheltering and stable. When bifurcated, it becomes light, openwork and free. It is this flexibility that makes them so popular.

What to make patio blinds out of?
In the OpenUp holder system you can install:
- Wooden boards with a cross section of e.g. 9.8 x 2 cm
- Aluminium laths 9.9 x 1.95 cm
- Other profiles, provided they have a matching cross-section
The OpenUp system is designed to allow the use of common materials - but only properly matched pieces will create a 'smooth wall'. Using random boards creates a 'Christmas tree' effect - with the angles of the boards visible.
Vertical or horizontal?
Terrace blinds are usually installed:
- Vertically - as a lateral cladding for terraces, balconies, summer houses or sheds
- Horizontal - as ceiling shades or decorative elements
Thanks to their simple design and modular frames (e.g. powder-coated aluminium), they can be easily adapted to individual dimensions.
