What is the moving board system?

What is a movable board system? It's a way to make your terrace, balcony or gazebo functional. See what else you should know.

The movable board system is a way of enclosing a terrace, balcony, gazebo or shed with movable wooden or aluminium blinds. This solution makes it possible to regulate the amount of light and protect the space from wind, rain or excessive sunlight. Systems of this type are becoming increasingly popular - both in new developments and in the modernisation of existing structures.

How does the moving board system work?

The system consists of two guides - left and right - in which movable sockets are placed. It is into these that the wooden boards or aluminium laths are inserted. The sockets allow them to be rotated around their own axis. This allows the blinds to be set independently in the open or closed position. This solution allows flexible management of light and privacy - without having to remove or use curtains or screens.

The prefabricated modules can be joined together to form longer segments, creating an enclosure tailored to the dimensions of the terrace or gazebo.

What does the system consist of?

The system includes guides with sockets, latches and boards or laths. In many solutions - such as OpenUp system - External clips are also available, which allow several modules to be permanently connected without disturbing the structure.

What is the movable board system used for?

These types of systems are most commonly used for the side development of terraces, balconies and gazebos. They provide effective protection from the sun, wind and external gaze. They also offer the possibility to adjust the angle of the blinds, which makes it possible to adjust the level of shading and ventilation to current conditions.

What to look for when choosing a system?

Handle material

The most common handles are made of polypropylene, aluminium or metal. Polypropylene, especially when properly selected for outdoor work, is lightweight, weather resistant and non-corrosive. Aluminium offers great durability, but is more expensive and more difficult to work with. Metal systems are sometimes solid, but can rust and are less precise in operation.

Number of sockets in the holder

The number of sockets determines how large an area can be covered with one kit. The OpenUp system, for example, has as many as six sockets, making it possible to create blinds up to 59 cm high using a single module. This solution significantly reduces installation time and costs.

Workmanship

When choosing a system, it is worth paying attention to the quality of the plastic and the precision of the workmanship. Handles should have uniform colours, smooth surfaces and well-fitting sockets. Visible mould marks may indicate inferior quality. It is advisable to look at the quotation photos and compare several solutions before making a decision.

Possibility to combine segments

Not every system allows modules to be easily joined together. The OpenUp system uses external clips to create continuous sections without fear of damaging the guides. This is particularly important when fitting larger areas, where connecting successive elements is necessary.

Which boards or laths fit into the system?

The OpenUp system is designed to fit most commercially available wooden boards and aluminium laths. Planks with a cross-section of 9.8 × 2 cm and aluminium laths with a cross-section of 9.9 × 1.95 cm work best. With these dimensions, the mechanism works smoothly and the blinds close completely.

It is also possible to use other boards that have not been milled. In this case, the boards will not close smoothly - they will form a characteristic 'Christmas tree' arrangement, i.e. they will line up at a fixed angle. Nevertheless, such an enclosure can still be functional and perform well as a sun and wind screen.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the moving board system?

This is a set of guides and brackets that allow the construction of movable wooden or aluminium blinds. They are used for the construction of terraces, balconies, gazebos and sheds.

Can the movable board system be installed by yourself?

Yes. Systems such as OpenUp are designed to be self-assembled and require no specialist tools. All you need is a spirit level, a screwdriver and suitably sized boards or laths.

Which boards fit into the system?

Wooden boards with a cross-section of 9.8 × 2 cm or aluminium laths with a cross-section of 9.9 × 1.95 cm work best. The OpenUp system also works with unmilled boards, but the louvres will then not close completely.

Can several sets be combined?

Yes. Third-party systems, such as OpenUp, use clips to connect successive modules securely and permanently.

Does the system work better with wood or aluminium?

Both materials are compatible with the handles. Wood can work when exposed to moisture, so it should be sufficiently dry. Aluminium is lighter and maintenance-free, but requires precise installation.
