A covered terrace is more than an outdoor extension of the living room. It's a living space - for relaxing, meeting and working outdoors. If you're looking for an idea for a terrace roof, it's worth considering not only the look of the structure, but also how it will function all year round. In this guide, you will find a clear comparison of the most commonly chosen solutions and tips to help you make your decision.

Where do I start when choosing a patio canopy?

Before deciding on a particular solution, answer some basic questions:

  • Is your terrace sheltered from the wind or is it exposed to gusts and lateral precipitation?
  • Do you want to use your terrace only in the summer or throughout the season?
  • Do you prefer modern, maintenance-free designs or natural, wooden forms?
  • How much time do you want to spend on maintenance?
  • What budget do you have at your disposal?

It is also worth checking whether a construction requires a building notification. For canopies up to 35 m² a notification is usually sufficient, but it is worth checking each situation locally.

Polycarbonate canopy on wooden or aluminium structure

It is a lightweight, semi-transparent panel that protects well from rain while allowing daylight to pass through. It does not rust and dampens the sound of hitting rain. Polycarbonate works well on both aluminium and wooden structures.

  • Design variants:
    • Aluminium: modern, powder-coated, maintenance-free
    • Wood BSH: natural, painted in the colour of your choice, requires maintenance
  • Construction lengths of up to 12.6 m
  • Maximum width: 5 m
  • Standard height at the wall: 2.3 to 3.5 m

Aluminium pergola with lamella roof

If you are looking for a canopy that not only protects your terrace from the sun and rain, but also allows you to control light and ventilation - an aluminium pergola with a lamella roof will be an excellent choice.

The roof of the pergola is made up of movable bladeswhich can be turned electrically - closing them completely when it rains or opening them when you want to let the light in.
The whole mechanism is hidden behind a wreath, making the design look aesthetically pleasing and minimalist.

  • Canopy: electrically operated slatted roof
  • Maximum width of a single module: 4 m
  • Maximum length of a single module: 7 m
  • Maximum height of construction: 2,8 m
  • Cross-section of columns: 15×8.5 cm
  • Drainageintegrated, draining to two columns
  • Available construction colours:
    • Anthracite RAL 7016
    • White RAL 9010
    • Black RAL 9005

Terrace awning

A good choice to start with, this is a folding canopy, usually made of UV-resistant fabric. It can be unfolded manually or automatically. Protects from sun and light rain, but is not suitable for permanent protection. It will not work well in strong winds. It is lightweight and aesthetically pleasing, but less durable than polycarbonate or fin roofs.

Sheet or tile roof

Such a canopy resembles the roof of a house - it is heavy, durable and provides complete protection from rain and snow. It can be part of a larger conversion or a year-round terrace. The downside is the lack of daylight and the need for a solid structure and often a construction project.

Is it worth enclosing the sides of a terrace?

A roof alone is not always enough. If your terrace is exposed to wind, side rainfall or the sight of neighbours - it is worth considering a side extension. Before you make a decision, answer two questions:

What do I use to enclose the sides of the terrace?

You can choose:

  • Glass - elegant, weather-resistant, light-transmitting
  • Movable external blinds - e.g. in the OpenUp system; you can tilt them like shutters to regulate shade and ventilation.

How do you enclose the sides of a terrace?

Two ways are available:

  • Fixed walls - works best as year-round insulation
  • Sliding walls - provide greater flexibility and freedom of use of the terrace

How much does a terrace roof cost?

In 2025, the prices of terrace canopies depend primarily on the type of construction, the size of the terrace, the materials and any extras (such as side builds or LED lighting). For example:

  • Terrace awning: from PLN 5-7,000
  • Polycarbonate canopy (wood or aluminium): between PLN 8 000 and PLN 15 000
  • Aluminium pergola with lamella rooffrom £20k to as much as £40k (depending on configuration)

The cost of roofing usually includes:
- supporting structure,
- roof covering (e.g. cellular polycarbonate or laths),
- on-site assembly,
- drainage (gutters, downspouts),
- transport.

In addition, you can order LED lighting, side panels and sliding walls.

Before you place your order, ask about:

  • Scope of installation - Does it include foundations, anchors, wall treatments?
  • Warranty and service - how many years does the construction and moving parts cover?
  • Formalities - will the manufacturer assist in checking whether a building notification is required?

Why choose a canopy from a Polish manufacturer?

When you choose a roof from a Polish manufacturer, you are assured of fast contact, easy service and availability of parts. The constructions are made for local climatic conditions - resistant to wind, snow and fluctuating temperatures. Thanks to local production, you can count on shorter lead times, individual project adaptations and support at every stage from measurement to installation. In doing so, you support the local economy and have a real influence on the quality of workmanship.
